Corpus Christi Taco Trucks showcased their best taco dishes at the second annual Que Bueno Taco Fest on Saturday September 14, 2019.

Here in the bend in the coast, tacos are as typical as a classic Whataburger. There is always a contact point on every other corner.

For many, tacos are part of the South Texas experience.

Gerald Flores, who owns and operates the popular online store Taco Gear, said tacos are deeply ingrained in the culture of Corpus Christi because of the people who live here.

“Tacos remind us of the many meals we share with family and friends at the dining table,” said Flores. “They are, in one way or another, a part of our lives and, for many of us, a large part of our upbringing.”

As we prepare to celebrate some Corpus Christi restaurants with free tacos and discounts on National Taco Day 2020 (Sunday October 4th), Flores gave us their five best Corpus Christi taco spots that are perfect for adding taco to celebrate.

Taquitos my country

Flores: Everything is fine here. The tacos are made with these aromatic tortillas that give the meat something special. You will understand what I am talking about if you try them out, and if you have already had them you will know. I always get an order for tacos de asada (fried meat) when I go here. You need to get an order of beans, they are just as amazing and flavorful.

Southside Barbacoa

Flores: Aside from the food, the family who run this place is one of the reasons I love it. It really feels like you’re eating at someone’s home. Their flour tortillas are some of the best in town. While they’re known for their barbacoa, their carne guisada (meat with sauce) is also one of the best in town. My favorite breakfast taco combo out here is the chorizo, egg, and bacon.

Where to find it: The Southside Barbacoa is located at 5894 Everhart Rd. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 6 am to 2 pm and on Sunday from 6 am to 1 pm. For more information, please call 361-334-0888.

Tacos El Tri

Flores: This late night taco spot is perfect if you’re craving tacos after most places have closed. They’re open earlier in the afternoon, but it’s the late night stops that saved my appetite. Asada, Pastor, you name it, you have it. Their mollejas (sweet bread) are actually my favorite and not something too many people know about.

Where to find it: Tacos El Tri is located at 5417 S. Staples St. It is open Monday to Saturday from 6pm to midnight. For more information, please call 361-687-5505.

Taco Bar Street

Flores: This clean and simple looking taco truck serves some of the best homemade food. Your taco orders come with a side of rice and beans, just like we’ve come to love from family gatherings. They are definitely known for their traditional (and delicious) lint-free tacos, but what I love about them is their homemade fries. Get the street nachos while you are there, you will love them.

Where to find it: Visit www.streetfoodfinder.com/tacobarstreet to see where the food truck will be next in Corpus Christi.

Mexican restaurant in Cancun (Yorktown)

Flores: When a restaurant makes really good asada, one that is so tasty, it makes everything so pleasant. This place has some delicious street tacos, but what’s even more fun to eat is their tortas (a sub-sandwich on French bread with meat, lettuce, and tomatoes). They’re packed with so much flavor.

Where to find it: Cancun (Yorktown) Mexican Restaurant is located at 6314 Yorktown Blvd. It is open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information, call 361-986-8622.
