UTRGV leads Texas A&M Corpus Christi to a sold out audience

EDINBURG, Texas (KVEO) – The University of Texas, Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team defeated the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders 14-4 in Tuesday at the UTRGV baseball stadium as part of the South Texas Showdown eight innings of a sold out crowd of 1,175.

Graduate student Coleman Grubbs led the vaqueros (17-17) by hitting a 3v5 tie with a double, three RBI, and a run scored for his sixth multi-hit game of the season. Junior Vela alum RJ Ochoa released his fifth multi-hit game, winning 2v5 with a double, an RBI with three career highs, and two runs with two fights. Graduate student Andy Atwood recorded his ninth multi-hit game of the season, walking 2-3 with a walk and three runs. Junior Angel De La Cruz recorded his fourth multi-hit game, walking one walk and one run 2: 4. The student after high school, Christian Sepulveda, published his ninth multi-hit game and finished the 2-on-4 game with an RBI and a run. Grubbs came up with a sacrificial fly a second to make the score 5-2.

Then, in the third, with a score of 5-3, the vaqueros did not unload the bases with anyone. Alexander went to force a run. The post graduate student Christian Sepulveda brought home a run with an infield single. Senior Jacob Hirsh followed with a sacrificial fly. Carson Letterman then hit a fly ball to right field. The ball was caught but fell off in the transition, allowing Alexander to score a goal. Grubbs covered the inning with an RBI single to score the 10-3.

The Vaqueros added three runs on an Ochoa single in run eight, a wild pitch Hirsh scored, a pass Alexander scored, and a walk-off double from Grubbs.

The Islanders (13-23) started against newcomer Zach Tjelmeland (1-0) in a two-part home game by Brendan Ryan with two outs in the first game.

That was it against Tjelmeland, who scored four career highs in a career high of 2.1 innings in his first career start.
