CHRISTI CORPUS, Texas, March 19, 2021 / PRNewswire / – CITGO Petroleum Corporation announced today that its Corpus Christi refinery has received the prestigious ENERGY 2020 award STAR® Certification awarded by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the second year in a row.
The energy STAR recognizes companies for superior energy efficiency and compatibility for improving the environment while improving business results. This recognition distinguishes the Corpus Christi refinery as a leader in energy and environmental management in the petroleum industry. The facility is the only petroleum refinery in the state Texas recognized with the ENERGY STARand one of only eight refineries across the country to receive the award.

Energy management is a key tenant of the CITGO business plan and the Body of Christ The refinery has implemented dozens of programs and enhancements to achieve high levels of efficiency and ultimately earn ENERGY STAR recognition, including:
- Implemented a “Steam Team” to help the refinery earn two Save Energy Now awards from the US Department of Energy;
- Install new flare gas recovery units and higher efficiency burners in most heating appliances;
- Inclusion of real-time monitoring programs to ensure the energy efficiency of every unit in the refinery;
- Performed the first successful cleaning of the convection section of a heater in North America with a robotic cleaner to restore the heaters to their original design efficiency;
- Development and implementation of a comprehensive energy management plan, training of all operating personnel and determination of energy management as a refinement-wide commitment.
ENERGY STAR For eligibility, refineries must achieve top quartile energy efficiency as measured by the Solomon Associates Energy Intensity Index (Solomon-EII). Eligible facilities must then apply for certification by undergoing a third party environmental review and issuing a Solomon Associates Energy Efficiency Statement that has been verified by a certified professional engineer.
This certification marks the second year in a row that a CITGO refinery has received this award and reflects the company’s drive to reduce emissions, improve efficiency and achieve high environmental performance.
