Southside was hit by two interceptions, which Flour Bluff converted into 14 points.

Southside got on the board on his fifth run of the night when Richard Torres David Tovar threw a pass over the Hornets defense to score a 56-yard touchdown with 7:19 in the second quarter. Javier Moreno’s extra point attempt hit the post and went wide.

The Cardinals’ next run was close to points, but Flour Bluff intercepted a pass from a Tovar trick play in the end zone to keep Southside from taking the lead at 2:15 in the first half.

Flour Bluff took advantage of the interception by running 80 yards in the final 2:15 before scoring a goal on a 4 yard run from Villegas with three seconds to go.

Southside was quick to respond in the third quarter. The Cardinals scored in their first game of half when Torres threw a 54-yard pass at Caleb Camarillo and was 10:43 left in the third quarter. Torres and Camarillo, who connected with two points, are trying to get the result with 14.

Flour Bluff added a field goal towards the end of the third quarter, rising 17-14. Southside had the next end of its ride with an interception by the Hornets that was brought back 35 yards back into the Cardinal’s territory. The Hornets drove 42 meters down and scored a 24-14 goal early in the fourth quarter. After another Cardinals playoff, Flour Bluff extended his lead with a late touchdown pass from Villegas to Ray Campbell.

Southside reduced the final deficit to 10 points with a touchdown pass from Torres to Micah Young in the last minute of the game.

What it means: Southside ended their 2020 season with a 9-2 record. The Cardinals were in the area for the second time in school history. A win over Flour Bluff would have led Southside to 10 wins and the third round for the first time.

Game balls: The Southside cue ball goes to Richard Torres, who completed 19 of 32 passes for 263 yards and three touchdowns for the Cardinals.

Next: Flour Bluff will face Victoria West in the regional round next weekend. Southside ends 9-2.
