CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Dozens of people gathered for lunch at Corpus Christi Saturday to learn about healthy living.
And when it comes to being healthy, your diet plays a huge role. For some, cutting down on carbs is a good place to start, so a local keto restaurant offers a quick class to teach people proper keto.
“Everything we make is very low-carb and sugar-free,” says Margie Castillo Phat Keto Co., owner.
Phat Keto is a place aimed at people who are on a keto diet.
Castillo said making low-carb candy and food came from her own health journey.
“I got a trainer last summer and I didn’t know how to eat healthily. He recommended that I go on the keto diet, so I did, and that’s how it all happened,” she said.
Her trainer Santos Rosales said the keto lifestyle not only improved her physical health, it also boosted her confidence and self-esteem.
“I just had to instill this in her and when she realized she could do so much more, she just went out and went on her own, so it’s great,” said Rosales.
Now Castillo is taking what she’s learned and teaching others at their lunch where she brought guest speaker and registered nutritionist Kate Hilliard.
Hilliard said the keto diet works by increasing your healthy fat intake and lowering your carbohydrates.
“This puts your body in a state of ketosis so that instead of burning carbohydrates you are burning fat, so many people experience severe weight loss,” she said.
“Typical American Western diet is processed food, it’s fast food, and that really does away with where we’re eating more whole foods, which is what everyone should be eating,” said Hilliard.
If you’re thinking about the keto diet and want more information, they host lunch every Saturday at their location outside Doddridge and Alameda.
