New year, new food inspections.

The New Year brought inspection reports that kept rodent droppings, fried chicken in cardboard boxes, and dirty kitchen utensils.

Ten food companies in Corpus Christi scored less than 90 points, and more than 60 received perfect results.

Here are the best and worst food inspection results for January 2020.

La Mexicana Bakery & Tortilla Factory, 6337 S. Padre Island Drive, Corpus Christi: The restaurant was inspected on Jan. 28 and received an 84th Inspectors found pie pans stacked on top of each other, staff had to wash their hands or wear gloves after assignments, and chemical sprays were found near food, reports show. The hand basin only had to be used for hand washing, food had to be covered at all times and areas behind the devices had to be cleaned. Records show that this was the first inspection of the restaurant.

Hunan Express, 5502 Everhart Road, Corpus Christi: The restaurant was inspected on Jan. 3 and was given an 85. Inspectors found chicken at unsuitable temperatures, chicken required refrigeration and fried chicken was stored in cardboard boxes, reports show. Employees had to wash their hands after wiping them on an apron, and employees had to wear hair clips. The restaurant was inspected in August 2019 and received a 99.

China Bear, 10514 Leopard Street, Corpus Christi: The buffet was inspected on Jan. 17 and received an 86. Inspectors found a rodent fell, a dirty ice machine, and food stored on the bottom of the fridge and freezer, reports show. The floor near the drinks station needed cleaning and the vents in the kitchen area were dirty. The buffet received an 89 in October 2019 and a 90 in February 2019.

Taqueria Jalisco, 5322 Everhart Road, Corpus Christi: The restaurant was inspected on Jan. 13 and received an 87th inspection. Inspectors found raw meat stored over vegetables, chemicals stored near food and deep fryers at inappropriate temperatures, reports show. Food had to be dated, wipes were stored improperly, and plates were used to serve food. The restaurant was inspected in July 2019 and received a 90.

Third Coast Park Sports & Spirits, 6201 S. Padre Island Drive, Corpus Christi: The restaurant was inspected on Jan. 13 and received an 87th inspection report found dirty microwave ovens, ice machines and chemical sprays near deep fryers, reports show. A certified grocery manager was needed, the hand basin was too far from the prep area, and there was a lack of soap and towels nearby. The restaurant was inspected in November 2018 and received a 96.

Brookdale Corpus Christi, 6410 Meadowvista Boulevard, Corpus Christi: The senior community was inspected on Jan. 10 and received an 88. Inspectors found expired products in a cooler and dirty microwave, can opener and utensils, reports show. In September 2018, the living community received a 92.

La Quinta Inn, 14430 S. Padre Island Drive, Corpus Christi: The hotel was inspected on Jan. 29 and received an 88th inspectors found debris from shelves in a cooler, insect killer near the utensil sink, and no valid food manager card, reports show. The employees also needed ration cards. The hotel was inspected in August 2019 and received a 92.

Inspectors found raw meat stored over cooked meat or vegetables, the dishwasher was not properly sanitized, and spray bottles were near food, reports show. Employees wearing hair clips and wiping towels were improperly stored. The restaurant received a 96 last year.

Alamo Drafthouse, 7601 S. Staples Street, Corpus Christi: The dine-in was inspected on Jan. 15 and received an 89th chicken stored at improper temperatures, the dishwasher disinfected at improper temperatures, and chemical spray bottles stored near food, inspection reports show. Last year the theater scored a 98.

Corpus Christi County Club, 6300 Everhart Road, Corpus Christi: The club was inspected on Jan. 22 and received an 89. Dishes needed to be washed thoroughly, spray bottles were stored near food, and food had to be dated, reports show. The club received a 92nd in July 2018.
